the virgo odyssey: leo moon (2026) //jinkx monsoon

ALBUMS★2/5

i've spent over a decade idolizing jinkx for her charisma, unabashed honesty, devotion to pure comedy and vocal prowess. the inevitable album (2014) was a gentle caress from a motherly figure telling me i'm valid and i'll figure it out. a gender anarchist writing music about that feeling of not fitting in, without pulling punches, or sacrificing authenticity.

unfortunately the follow up to the virgo odyssey: prologue ep, leo moon is lackluster at best, and i can't help but feel a little sore abt it. i feel a part of jinkx's authenticity was sacrificed for the blandness of west hollywood club music aesthetics. there are certainly strong moments, the ep's closer planet yes has a certain david bowie-esque deep vibratto and existentialist interplanetary pop vibe that feels a little closer to the jinkx persona i know.

the rest though? mehhhhh. thats the life is the only song that doesn't feel like its pandering to the white gays at rocco's weho (rip.... iykyk). but it instead doesn't even sound like her??in fact, it sounds more like a gorillaz song with a jinkx monsoon feature than a jinkx original.

overall, i think i'm disappointed by the lack of perceived authenticity in the lyric writing and overall aesthetics, and the extra sting from my own connection to the artist makes it hurt just that little bit extra.
