don't let me be hard,

don't let me be soft.

don't let my calloused skin

numb my loving caress.

don't let me melt into myself

at the first sign of callousness.

don't let me enter a room

before washing off the coating of deet.

don't let me avoid a room

full of mosquitos looking for nectar sweet.

don't let my years of shame

burrow unto my brow

don't let me hide behind my furrows

as if the mask would protect me.

don't let me be hard.

don't let me be soft.

for i can let the current carry me,

and paddle to stay afloat.
