persepolis (2007)

directed by vincent paronnaud & marjane satrapi
when i tell you there was not a singular frame of this movie that didn't have a profound effect on me. it truly is a film you have to be in the headspace to receive but when you do watch it, you cannot help but leave as a changed person. especially in 2025, nearly two decades after this film was released, it takes on a whole new context with the war in gaza expanding across the middle east and western influence on it all (2026 EDIT: unbelievable how much MORE topical this film has gotten after the USA and israeli attacks on iran JESUS). to have a deeply political story with such incredibly complicated and interesting characters was so fulfilling as a viewer. and i am very much reminded how much i love french/european animation. i simply cannot sing my praises enough to this film and show gratitude to it, i do feel profoundly changed by it.
personal anecdote:
when i was 18 years old i wasn't very good at spending time alone. i forced myself to go on a lil self-care date to a local bookstore in boston, and i came across the graphic novel persepolis. i sat down on the floor of the book store and read and read and read and then re-read when i had gotten cover to cover. persepolis holds a very dear part of my heart.
