directed by matt johnson
as a canadian, i owe a massive debt of gratitude to matt johnson. what he has done for representation of the toronto, ontario experience with this movie has only been achieved once before, and that was by my absolute favourite film of all time scott pilgrim vs the world. a hard torch to carry, but one that this film carries near effortlessly. he has carried a similar torch with repping kitchener-waterloo in blackberry, which i've said before and i'll say again, has my absolute favourite film quote of all time. thats a lot of favourites (with a u).
so many references to pick up on: the cp24 truck in the building (an excellent visual gag, i might add), the roz and mocha interview, the consistency of location being essentially all up queen street west, the rivoli in reality being a totally achievable club to play. i am unconvinced that other than matt and jay, a single person in this movie was a paid actor. every person in this film looked so utterly natural and confused and gosh darn canadian. it is an unbelievably funny film, and when you start to pick apart all the ways they weaved original show footage into new footage, it really blows you away even more.
the movie is stupid, low budget, unserious, unyielding, and a complete rip off of back to the future, and those are all the things that make it amazing. thenks matt johnson for my life.
