fight club (1999)

★1/5FILMS

directed by david fincher
i have to preface this interview, because after having this opinion for so long, many of the folks who get upset with me about it argue that my problem with fight club is not the movie itself, but the reception of the film, which in and of itself is not the fault of the creators. to them i say: should the parent not be responsible for the behaviour of the child? or the teacher responsible for the learned behaviour of their students? while i don't have an explicit issue with the movie-making and cinematography of david fincher's fight club, i abhor that it was released into the world and the impact the messaging and character choices have had on impressionable and fragile men in the world. so i do believe this movie was net bad, while still believing there was a lot of good stuff to look at.
that out of the way, i have actually never hated a movie so violently in my life. this movie became the blueprint for toxic masculinity at the turn of the century and gave voices to simply the worst kind of man, which was perhaps the opposite of the intention. however, the movie’s lack of self awareness made the message of masculine extremism and detachment from the physical world go wayyyy over the head of anyone who is not even the least bit a critical thinker. it feels like satire that leaned in so far to the satire that it looped all the way back around to perpetuating what it was meant to satirize in the first place.
if a man says his fav movie is fight club, i know immediately to run. that being said, as a motion picture the acting, effects, directing, and production was all pretty breathtaking. the script was pretty cheesy and self-gratifying. i hate scripts that are meant to sound smart but are not self aware enough to avoid trying too hard.

this might be my hottest movie take of all time please fight me in the comments below i welcome the hate.
